Overview
We are reworking Spotify because of the opportunity to improve the experience on the artists’ side.
Collaboration has always been a large part of the music world, but is still difficult to navigate for smaller creators. It is also difficult to navigate the gray area of legal musical remixing and sampling as an independent artist.

Research
Our main goal was to find a point of origin for the struggles of small musical creators. We went into our interviews and surveys with the intent to understand the activities/processes of both musical creators and listeners, and piece together the issues that they may be facing and how to address them. Since our team had limited collective knowledge of the musical industry and individual journeys navigating the space, we needed to educate ourselves by speaking directly to those who are. We also made sure that our interviewees had a diverse range of experience so that we will be able to iterate on designs that accommodate users with varied, but connected needs. User research is always important for understanding who you’re designing for, and it is especially necessary for something as complex as the music industry, where being a musician can mean many different things.
Sketching helped our team visualize potential interfaces based on user flows created

Personas
Personas were created based on real users who were interviewed throughout the entre design process. These representations of our user base were a consistent reminder of who we were building our feature for.
Wireframing
After sketching, our team created a low fidelity prototype to test our features with interviewees. We received critical feedback regarding buttons layouts and information overload that enabled us to create a much more user friendly user experience as we entered the final stages of our project.
Moving into our high fidelity prototype, our team implement feedback received from small creators and matched our interface to the style of Spotify to make the experience feel like an extension of the platform.
